A city that lives the game

Manchester is one of the great football cities in the world, and it feels like it. Two Premier League clubs, a famous derby, a national football museum in the city centre and a ring of historic clubs in the surrounding towns mean the game is part of daily life here. For single fans, that means plenty of shared ground, and a few derby-day rules worth knowing.

The two big clubs in 2026-27

Manchester's two top-flight clubs both play in the Premier League for the 2026-27 season.

Manchester United play at Old Trafford in Trafford, south-west of the city centre. The ground sits beside the Bridgewater Canal, a short distance from Salford Quays and MediaCityUK.

Manchester City play at the Etihad Stadium in east Manchester, part of the Etihad Campus beside the Manchester Regional Arena and the National Cycling Centre.

The derby between them is one of the most watched fixtures in English football, and it splits families, offices and friendship groups right across Greater Manchester.

Beyond the big two

Greater Manchester has a long list of clubs with loyal followings in towns such as Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport and Wigan, plus a strong non-league scene. FC United of Manchester, formed by supporters in 2005, play at Broadhurst Park in Moston. Lower-league and non-league grounds are great for dates: tickets are easier to get, crowds are friendly and you can usually talk during the match. Check each club's own site for its league and fixtures this season.

The women's game has a growing following too, and both of the big clubs run women's teams with their own fixtures to follow.

Getting to matches

Metrolink trams serve both grounds. For Old Trafford, the Old Trafford stop (shared with the cricket ground) and Exchange Quay are both a walk from the stadium. For the Etihad, the Etihad Campus and Velopark stops on the Ashton line are close by. Trams get very busy before and after games, so leave time and expect queues.

Plenty of people walk from the city centre to the Etihad, and to Old Trafford from the Quays or Deansgate. For a pre-match meet-up with a date, choose somewhere a little away from the ground so you are not fighting the crowds.

Check Transport for Greater Manchester and the clubs' own travel pages before you go, as services and road closures change on matchdays.

Derby etiquette for couples

Mixed Red and Blue couples are common in Manchester, and most survive the derby with a sense of humour. A few tips from local couples:

Date ideas in Manchester

The National Football Museum. In the Urbis building beside Cathedral Gardens, it is ideal for a relaxed first date with plenty to talk about.

A stadium tour. Both Old Trafford and the Etihad run tours on non-match days. Walking through the tunnel is fun even for casual fans.

Salford Quays. A walk along the water near Old Trafford, with cafés and the Lowry arts centre, makes a good before or after.

Ancoats and the Northern Quarter. Two popular spots for food and drink, both an easy walk from the Etihad.

A non-league afternoon. Try FC United at Broadhurst Park, or one of the many smaller clubs in the surrounding towns.

Five-a-side. The city has lots of five-a-side centres, and some run mixed leagues.

Watching a match in a pub. The city centre is full of pubs showing football. Pick a quieter one for a date.

Watching away from the ground

Not everyone in Manchester has a season ticket, and many fans watch most games on television. Pubs across the city screen live football, but different pubs lean towards different clubs, so ask locals or look out for club colours on match nights. A pub screening with a good atmosphere is a fun date, but loud. If you want to talk, meet beforehand for food somewhere quieter.

Where to meet before a match

For Old Trafford, many couples meet in Salford Quays or MediaCityUK, where there are cafés and bars a short walk or tram ride from the ground, or further out in Chorlton and Sale. For the Etihad, Ancoats and the Northern Quarter are an easy walk, and New Islington's canal-side spots are calmer than the pubs on the main routes. If you are meeting someone for the first time, pick somewhere you both know how to reach and that is not packed with supporters an hour before kick-off.

Outside matchdays, the city has plenty of options for a first date: the Whitworth and Manchester Art Gallery, a walk along the canals in Castlefield, food markets and a strong live music scene.

Getting home after an evening game

Midweek and Sunday evening kick-offs mean a late finish. Trams get very crowded after the final whistle, and queues at the stops near both grounds can be long. If you live outside the city, check the last trains from Piccadilly, Victoria and Oxford Road before you set off. Agree with your date how each of you is getting home, and never feel obliged to share a taxi with someone you have just met.

Manchester through the seasons

Derby weekends, European nights and cup runs make some months busier than others. If you are new in the city, the summer break is a good time to meet people, and pre-season friendlies are a relaxed introduction to either ground.

Staying safe

Pick a public venue for a first meeting, let a mate know your plans and think about getting home, especially on matchdays when trams and trains are crowded. Do not send money to anyone you meet online, and only buy match tickets from the clubs themselves. Read our safety page for more.

A note on clubs and names

We are not connected with any Manchester club or league. Club and ground names are used to describe where people live and support, not to suggest any endorsement.

Grassroots and Sunday league

Greater Manchester's parks are full of grassroots football every weekend, from junior leagues to veterans. If you or a date play, a Sunday morning on the touchline followed by lunch is a very Mancunian kind of date.

Other cities are listed on our locations hub.

The National Football Museum as a first date

Away from the crowds of matchday, the museum is a relaxed place to wander, talk and discover which displays each of you lingers at. It works whether or not your date loves football.
